Thanks to the board retreat attendees at Intrepid Theatre for their participation, and their willingness to have me share their board process with my blog readers as an example of this mode of working.
These photos were taken during the session to capture the “raw” state of charts at a meeting. This week and next I’ll be putting finishing touches on them, which as you’ll see are much more than a flourish there and a signature here. I’m using colour pastels to visually identify groups, apply themes to the charts according to the messages or ideas on them, and basically bring them to life.
Once again this isn’t ALL the charts – but a good sample to give you an idea of what this stuff looks like when the group sees it in the meeting. Just wait for the finished ones!
So… a show-and-tell … click on the thumbnails to see bigger versions of each image.
- Borrowing the Grove meeting startup format, I created my own visual metaphor to capture the attention of these theatre folks.
- Here’s me working at the wall!
- What are all the things this board does? I used a green pastel to denote things the board suggested, and blue to denote what staff suggested the board does.
- This shows the “finished” charts pasted as a gallery on the walls of the meeting space. The Intrepid Theatre studio lobby was an excellent venue for this work!
- We listed the skills the current board has, and what skills they want to recruit. The “Resources” in the middle are the bridge between present and future.
- This chart happened as an impromptu addition to the agenda. Some people wanted to talk about recruitment and others wanted to brainstorm how to make the board stronger with existing members. This cycle of building and renewal will be a strong start for the board at its March retreat.
